What Does my blood Test Result Mean?

A blood test showed I have extremely low iron; I was given 3 iron infusions that was to give me a big energy boost (didn't), and I no longer see that doctor. Would ferrous sulfate be of benefit? I am chronically fatigued, have no life, spend 70-80% of my time in bed, reading or sleeping - extremely depressing. I'm 67 years of age. Oh, and cannot take sulfa - side effects are extremely painful, so would this eliminate the ferrous sulfate? And is so, can you sugest something? Thanks so much for any info.

Hello and welcome to HCM,
The treatment for low iron is ferrous sulphate tablets.
However, certain other investigations are also required before any treatment is given.
Other investigations like - ferritin, total iron binding capacity, transferrin, transferrin saturation etc are required.
Low iron can occur in iron deficiency anemia, chronic deficiency anemia, lead poisoning can lead to low iron levels.
Thus, further management can be planned after clinical assessment and relevant investigations.

Thanks and take care
